Well, I may be grabbing at straws here, but Princess Kate did go with a vintage look, even if she did not anticipate it. Of course there are classic styles that will always be associated with a time period, but, unlike Diana, Kate chose a dress that was not modern, at least not based on what I see as the contemporary looks in wedding magazines today. In fact, Diana's dress is credited with developing the trend in the 80s of poofy.
Kate's choice in dress was conservative, of course. It was a conservative affair. But she had a special elegance in that dress that makes the world sure that William made the right choice for a princess. She was very reminiscent of past princesses in her Alexander McQueen gown. I read somewhere a commentator refer to the fashion house as being forward thinking, but they were most certainly thinking back when they designed this dress for Kate. The lace shoulders and sleeves and sweetheart bodice were a very popular style during the mid 50s thru early 60s. She even had a little hair bump in the back! Very Madmen.

i actually thought her dress was quite modern.. either way it was gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was that it was very Princess Grace, with a bit of a modernization. The skirt's embelishments seemed more modern to me, while the bodice and lace shoulders/sleeves is reminiscent to the styles you show here.
ReplyDeleteOh, I loved the dress. Reminded me of the early 60's, yes, now that you mention it. Yes, it had a vintage look.
ReplyDeleteHer dress def. had a vintage feel, and it actually looked like my Grandma's wedding dress from the early 50s!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you that the whole aesthetic is 50s/60s. The gown (esp. bodice) VERY VERY VERY similar to Grace Kelly's (just v-neckline instead of the higher one).
ReplyDeleteI loved Diana's dress even though it was a sign of the times for the 80s. Even now, I think it was regal and elegant. And let's be realistic here, Diana was really not conventional. She even pushed the envelope with the train length. Until she came along, the longest train was 20 ft. Diana's was 23. I loved that about her...she was not about to be the quiet little woman people thought she should be!
ReplyDeleteI thought she looked beautiful. As soon as I saw the lace, my first thought was of Princess Graces dress. Kates dress was divine- she looked stunning :)
ReplyDeleteI thought it was vintage done modern. Which is my favorite! I really hope this starts a trend and more gowns have sleeves now. I don't even mean long sleeves, just anything. It seems that all I see are strapless dresses, even if you should be wearing a different neckline. Vintage clothing had much more emphasis on sleeves and I think it's a design detail we are long overdue to bring back.
ReplyDeleteLoved Katies dress. it really reminded me of kellys dress. The laces, the long sleeves, the vail with laces... but yes a modern twist to it. She looked stunning.
ReplyDeleteWhat did you think of her hair and make up? You mantion a little bump on the back of her head, yes. But I really think she could have done a little bit more out of it. And her lipstick should not be so pale. I think it could have been a little more coloured. But I was imoressed. The most beautiful dress in a royal wedding for a long, long time.
I loved Dianas dress too. I can´t forget that wedding, watching it as a little girl. It was very spesial.
I thought the dress was definately a nod to a vintage style.
ReplyDeleteWith how Diana's dress influenced wedding dresses in the 80's, makes one wonder if Kate's will do the same? Has the strapless wedding dress finally met it's match?
We'll see...
I always thought Diana's wedding gown was horrendous---even at the time. My tastes though, never ran to the ultra puffy, 'little girl-ish', 'cupcake' kind of dress.
ReplyDeleteI personally think that if I were Diana looking at my choice 30 years later, I would cringe and feel 'what was I thinking'??
I LOVED Kate's whole look. I myself wore a very 'Audrey Hepburn' gown in the 90's , and I think this royal bride's dress may start a trend here for classier, more elegant wedding gowns. While not a prude at all, I am heartily sick of the ubiquitious, same-old, same-old strapless, 'runway' gowns of so many American brides.
Yes, I did get up at 4 AM, and watch the entire thing, and I think it was all lovely and amazing---a real 'feel-good' day...

I think you have made an interesting comparision to Margaret's dress, it is in fact far more like that than Grace Kelly's. I loved Margaret's style, I did a post on it on my blog. x
ReplyDeleteI agree, as soon as she got out of the car I thought about Grace Kelly. I love that style though, I hope it comes back because I don't really like my arms and would rather not have them exposed on my (future) wedding day
ReplyDeleteso true, it was a reinterpretation of the late 50s and 60s wedding gowns
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed in her dress. I had no exact vision for her dress, but my thoughts were not in the direction she took. I was glad to see sleeves. Everyone is doing sleeveless and I didn't want to see her following that. I still like Jackie Kennedy's wedding dress. It was beautiful and was made by a nobody.
